For many shoppers, a three-row SUV is only worth considering if those three rows are actually inside a cavernous interior. In other words, what's the point of buying a three-row transport unless the whole family can actually stretch out and relax? The Honda Pilot is a great choice for those who demand interior volume and lots of creature comforts. It's also a powerfully driven vehicle, boasting a strong V6 engine.

The 2018 Honda Pilot was unchanged from the previous year, but the new 2019 model comes with a few notable upgrades. Both model years are a good investment, however. The Pilot doesn't depreciate rapidly, and the standard and optional safety systems are among the best in the industry. Below, a more detailed comparison between the two model years follows.

Comfort

Big, airy, and comfortable are three adjectives that perfectly describe the Honda Pilot's interior. Both the 2018 and 2019 models come with seating for eight, the exceptions being the Elite trim with its second-row captain's chairs that reduces the seating capacity to seven. The first and second rows of seats boast plenty of legroom and elbow room. The seatbacks are cushiony, making for a comfortable ride on long highway trips. The uplevel trims come with a sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery. For 2019, the EX trim gets heated front seats, one-touch second-row seat controls, and an eight-way power driver's seat. Also new for 2019 is an upgrade for the Elite trim. This version now comes with auto-dimming side mirrors, a wireless phone charger, and newly designed interior color schemes.

Performance

Both the 2018 and 2019 Honda Pilot models are powered by a V6 rated at 280 horsepower. Last year's model could be purchased with an optional nine-speed automatic transmission on the uplevel trims, but for 2019 this transmission is standard on the Touring and Elite trims. Both models years feature the Intelligent Traction Management System, standard on all but the base trim. This system adds a Snow Mode drive for the front-wheel drive versions and Snow/Sand/Mud modes for Pilots purchased with AWD. Handling is superb, and the Pilot gets top marks for acceleration, with the vehicle going from a full stop to 60 mph in less than seven seconds. The 2019 model doesn't get an engine update, and the vehicle weighs about the same as the 2018 offering, so overall fuel efficiency hasn't changed.

Safety Features

The 2018 Honda Pilot comes with plenty of standard and optional safety features. The base trim has a rearview camera, the LATCH system, and a full set of airbags. The uplevel EX adds on dynamic guidelines for the rearview camera plus Honda's LaneWatch system. The Honda Sensing package is available on all but the base trim. However, for 2019, the Honda Sensing package is standard across the trim lineup. This means that all trims come with collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation, and adaptive cruise control.
