The Honda Pilot is a good choice for those seeking a roomy, family-friendly transport. On the inside, the Pilot resembles a minivan thanks to its tall stance and vertical roof pillars. The 2019 Pilot receives some welcome upgrades, notably a revised nine-speed automatic transmission, new standard safety features, and changes to the high-tech packages.

The 2019 Acura MDX is a worthy competitor in the large crossover vehicle class, but even the recent upgrades to this model leave it trailing the Honda Pilot. Its interior, while nicely appointed, isn't as spacious as the Pilot, and although its powertrain is similar, fuel efficiency isn't quite on the same level. Also, several key safety features are missing on the mid-level trim. Below, a detailed comparison of the two models follows.

Interior

This is perhaps the top-selling point of the 2019 Honda Pilot. As soon as one climbs aboard, there's a feeling of spaciousness. The front seats and second-row seating area boast plenty of elbow room, and the seats, while cushiony, aren't too soft. The seatbacks are perfectly contoured for relaxation during long road trips. Cubbies and storage pockets are everywhere, and they're large without being intrusive. The entry-level LX trim is anything but sparse on the interior. It comes with a 60/40-split folding third-row seatback, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, air conditioning, and soft upholstery. The EX, which only costs a bit more, adds on a power-adjustable driver's seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an upgraded stereo system. The 2019 Acura MDX base trim is far more expensive than the Pilot LX, and although buyers get leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats, they also get a smaller cabin size and a much tighter third-row seating area.

Standard Safety Features

The 2019 Honda Pilot now comes with all of the standard features of the Honda Sensing package. This means that even the base trim includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation with automatic emergency braking, road departure intervention, and lane departure warning and intervention. This is in addition to the standard LaneWatch feature, full set of airbags including full-length side curtain bags, and the LATCH system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on all but the LX trim. The 2019 Acura MDX comes with the AcuraWatch package on all trims including the base Standard, but the Technology package, which is much more expensive, must be purchased in order to get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Technology package is actually the next trim level, meaning that buyers may have to pay for additional high-tech and comfort features that they don't even want.

Upgraded High-Tech Features

In addition to the new standard safety systems, the 2019 Honda Pilot also receives some welcome high-tech upgrades. These include a Wi-Fi hotspot, a rear passenger intercom system, a newly designed and much-heralded 8-inch screen display, enhanced telematics, and a new, advanced wireless charging pad. The 2019 Acura MDX doesn't receive much in the way of high-tech upgrades. Also, one must purchase the uplevel Advance Package in order to get additional USB ports, front and rear parking sensors, and the surround-view camera.

The Honda Pilot has been upgraded in all the right places for it’s 2019 model. Contact Pohanka Honda of Fredericksburg today to schedule a test drive of this roomy, nicely appointed three-row crossover. Chances are you'll be more impressed with this model than with the competing Acura MDX.
