Buyers considering the purchase of a larger SUV capable of seating seven or eight and still offering room for cargo have many choices, but some of these models are pretty much geared for off-road travel. In other words, models such as the Toyota 4Runner aren't exactly built in the mold of mall excursion transports. On the other hand, the 2018 Honda Pilot serves very well as an everyday family hauler, and it also has one of the roomiest, nicely equipped cabins of any full-size SUV.

The 2018 Honda Pilot is really a crossover, and this differentiates it from the truck-based 4Runner. It promises a more comfortable ride than its competitor from Toyota, and although it isn't built to tackle the off-roads as easily as the 4Runner, it brings much to the table that the 4Runner does not.

Interior Features

The 2018 Honda Pilot isn't considered a luxury vehicle, but once the prospective buyer climbs aboard and starts looking around, the idea that this model hits the elegant sweet spot is instantly realized. The Pilot boasts a huge amount of storage space, and there are carefully placed pockets and cubbies throughout the spacious cabin. There's plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front- and second-row seating areas. The upright seating means excellent outward visibility, and the tilt-and-slide second row is operated via a single-button release system. The 2018 Toyota 4Runner isn't as lavishly furnished inside the cabin, and it's also a bit difficult to get in and out because of the vehicle's off-road design with a higher chassis and frame placement. The Trail versions are expensive but don't even offer a sunroof.

Driving Experience

The 2018 Honda Pilot is fitted with a 3.5L V6 that provides ample power. It's mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission that comes with a manual shift feature. Acceleration is very good for a vehicle of this size. Even though it's a three-row, the Pilot feels light on its feet, and the stability control is excellent. If all-wheel drive is chosen, the reward is great handling over snow or mud thanks to the active center and rear differentials. Steering is precise and with little road feel. The 2018 Toyota 4Runner is more off-road oriented, so the suspension is of course excellent, but there's a lot of low-speed indecision from the transmission, and the 4Runner actually performs better when it's fully loaded. When passengers and cargo are absent, handling is a bit tricky.

Ride Comfort

The 2018 Honda Pilot offers one of the most comfortable, quiet rides in its segment. The seats are just the right firmness, and the supportive curves fit most adults nicely, so there's not a lot of fatigue during longer trips. Small bumps in the road are softened nicely, and there's very little right or left lean during tight turns. The 2018 4Runner is a truck-based SUV, and this means there's some sacrificing of ride quality. Passengers get jostled somewhat on uneven pavement and on dirt roads. The seats aren't as well-padded as those on the Pilot.
