Compact cars make up a vehicle class littered with different body styles, power capabilities, and cabin arrangements. Many of the bestsellers are offered as either a sedan or hatchback, and some can even be purchased as a coupe. This is true of the 2018 Honda Civic, a well-rounded model that appeals to a huge percentage of the buying public.

One of the Civic's chief rivals is the affordable Ford Focus. This model offers a quiet ride and a functional interior, but it lags behind the Civic when it comes to the number of standard features per trim level. The 2018 Focus also comes with a tiny engine that many will find inadequate, and very few technology wows are included on the lower trims. Below, a summary of the two vehicles is offered, and this should help the prospective buyer make an educated purchase decision.

Performance

The 2018 Honda Civic base trim is fitted with a four-cylinder engine rated at 158 horsepower. Manual transmission is standard, but the buyer can choose a continuously variable transmission instead. If the hatchback version is chosen, a turbocharged 1.5L engine that produces 174 horsepower is the standard engine. A more powerful version of this engine is standard on the hatchback Sport trim. The hatchback Type R is a sportier version that features a turbocharged 2.0L engine rated at 306 horsepower. Fuel efficiency is impressive regardless of the engine chosen, but note that the 2.0L engine is rated best in its class in terms of real-world highway mileage. The 2018 Civic also boasts better-than-average acceleration and braking. The 2018 Ford Focus can be purchased with a 2.0L engine with similar capabilities as the 2.0L engine on the Civic, but the fuel efficiency isn't as good. The tiny 1.0L three-cylinder engine, the only engine available on the SE sedan trim, produces a meager 123 horsepower, and acceleration is a problem.

Interior Design

The 2018 Honda Civic has a nicely designed interior, with plenty of rear-seat legroom and cleverly designed storage areas. The control layout is highly logical and features touch-sensitive buttons. The front seating area boasts lots of headroom. The materials quality is well above-average. Standard features on the base trim include automatic climate control, a height-adjustable driver's seat, and 60/40-split folding rear seats. The hatchback version includes the sunroof. The EX-L sedan adds on leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. The 2018 Ford Focus base trim comes with air conditioning and split folding rear seats, but it lacks some of the power accessories. The front control panel is rather difficult to navigate because many of the buttons and knobs look exactly the same. The rear seating area isn't designed for adults, and there's a serious lack of legroom back there.

High Tech and Safety

Every 2018 Honda Civic comes with a rearview camera, Bluetooth, and one or more USB ports. The base trim has a 5-inch screen display, but the EX and above trims offer a larger and more functional 7-inch display. All versions are eligible for the Honda Sensing safety package that includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic braking. The 2018 Focus also comes with a rearview camera and Bluetooth regardless of trim level, but the much more expensive SEL trim must be chosen in order to get the Sync 3 system, and navigation isn't even standard on this trim but must be purchased as a stand-alone option or as part of an expensive package.
