The Honda Odyssey represents the pinnacle of success when it comes to larger, passenger-friendly minivans. This vehicle class hasn't really suffered much despite the ever-increasing number of three-row SUV models. The 2018 Sienna is a well-built driving machine, but it lacks the forward-thinking comfort design and the advanced high-tech goodies found on all trims of the 2019 Honda Odyssey. In short, those in the market for a well-rounded family hauler are likely to be more pleased with the Odyssey and its generous list of standard features than what is found inside the 2018 Toyota Sienna.
Superior Base Model
The 2019 Honda Odyssey comes out a bit ahead of the Sienna in terms of base trim features. These include:
- • Honda Sensing safety equipment
- • Power front seats
- • A 60/40-split folding third row seat
- • A wonderful seven-speaker sound system
Both the second- and third-row seating areas accommodate adults with ease. There's a huge amount of headroom and legroom, so getting comfortable inside the Odyssey is no problem. The automatic climate control system on the base model is superior to what is found in most other minivan models. The 2018 Toyota Sienna base trim comes with tri-zone automatic climate control, and the front seats are very comfortable, but the standard features list is a bit lacking. The stereo system on the base trim isn't on par with the Odyssey's audio system.
High-Tech Innovation
Each trim of the 2019 Honda Odyssey expands the list of high-tech goodies. Some of the standard and optional features that represent superiority over the Toyota Sienna include:
- • A crisp, 8.0-inch screen display
- • Wi-Fi connectivity
- • CabinWatch and CabinTalk
- • A 10.2-inch rear entertainment screen display
The CabinWatch system utilizes an infrared sensor to display a view of the rear seating area, and CabinTalk pauses all audio streaming into headphones so that the driver can communicate with passengers. The rear entertainment system comes loaded with Internet-based apps such as iHeart Radio, PBS Kids, and Spotify. The 2018 Toyota Sienna comes with the Safety Sense safety systems on all trims, but the base L trim is lacking in other areas of high-tech features. Buyers must purchase the expensive Limited trim in order to get the 10-speaker stereo system and the Toyota Safety Connect system.
Family-Friendly Interior
Everyone's heard of the Magic Slide seating system that allows for various passenger seating configurations. Other highlights that set the 2019 Odyssey apart from the Toyota Sienna include:
- • Thicker, more comfortable second-row seats
- • Up to 145 cubic feet of cargo space
- • Superior utility specs
The cavernous interior of the 2019 Honda Odyssey can't really be described here, but once aboard, the interior opens up like a big auditorium. Small item storage is no problem. Cubbies and compartments are located throughout the cabin. Cupholders abound and are well-placed throughout the seating areas. The 2018 Toyota Sienna can't compete with the Odyssey in terms of cargo space or interior volume. Headroom decreases significantly as one moves further back to the second- and third-row seating areas.
