Three-row crossovers are advertised in such a manner as to target families who love to shop together and whose kids play soccer. There's nothing wrong with a big vehicle that's comfortable on the inside and handles well on the freeway so long as it also comes with a long list of the most desired convenience features. That's a good description of the bestselling Honda Odyssey, which can be thought of as both an SUV and a minivan.
With such niceties as Magic Glide seats, the latest in available safety and security systems, and a powerful enough engine, the 2019 Honda Odyssey will appeal to those who need a big yet easy-to-operate SUV. Not much has changed since the 2018 models were released, but this is an absolutely great example of not trying to fix something that isn't broken.
Performance
The 2019 Honda Odyssey is powered by a 3.5L V6 rated at 280 horsepower. Some three-row SUVs have more powerful engines, but these models suffer in terms of fuel efficiency. The lower trims have nine-speed automatic transmission while the Touring and Elite versions get a new 10-speed transmission. Shifting is very smooth, and there's no hesitation when shifts for acceleration or braking are made in the lower gear range. On the open road, the Odyssey behaves quite well and doesn't exhibit much lean or roll, something that afflicts many competing minivans and SUVs. Steering is very quick, and tracking at high speeds is true.
Interior and Features
One of the big selling points on the 2019 Honda Odyssey is the logical and functional layout of the center control panel. Physical buttons dominate, so drivers need not worry about sensitive touch icons. There's a lot of vertical range in the driver's seating adjustment, so tall drivers can easily find a comfortable position. All three rows of seats accommodate adults with ease. Standard features on all trims include a 60/40-split folding third-row seat, automatic climate control, a central display screen, Bluetooth, and USB ports. The uplevel EX adds on power-sliding rear doors for easier entry and exit, driver's seat power lumbar adjustment, heated front seats, and the Magic Slide system for the second-row seats. The higher-end trims come with navigation and a rear entertainment system, a larger screen display, an integrated vacuum cleaner, and upgraded upholstery. The Touring and Elite trims offer a 4G LTE connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety
Every 2019 Honda Odyssey comes with front, side, and side-curtain airbags and a rearview camera. The Honda Sensing Suite is offered on all but the base trim and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and road departure mitigation. Best of all, the EX trim, which doesn't cost much more than the base trim, comes with all of these driver assist systems as standard.
