A label like compact sedan suggests great gas economy but confined spaces. In reality, these cars can be pretty sizable inside. A couple of very good examples are the 2019 Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. They both deliver the goods when it comes tight fuel usage without tight interior dimensions. But a closer gaze indicates the Civic might deliver a bit more.

Interior Space

With most headroom and legroom measurements appearing very close, the 2019 Civic still pulls ahead in front headroom with 39.3 inches over the 38.3 inches in the 2019 Corolla. Turning the yardstick sideways tells another story with the Civic getting 56.9 inches of front shoulder space and 53.7 inches of front hip space rather than the 54.8 inches of front shoulder clearance and 53 inches for front hips found in the Corolla. There’s no improvement for second-row commuters as the Civic offers 55 inches for shoulders and 47.3 inches for hips instead of 54.8 inches of shoulder latitude and 43.9 inches of hip clearance that characterize the 2019 Corolla.

Performance

Both competitors rely on CVTs or 6-speed manuals for transmissions. Otherwise, there’s some noticeable differences with the 2019 Civic gaining the upper hand in both brawn and fuel savings. Mainline Civic sedans start with a 2-liter straight-4 that outputs 158 horses with up to 28 mpg city and 40 mpg highway* using the manual transmission or 31 mpg city and 40 mpg* highway relying on the CVT. By contrast, the primary 2019 Corolla workhorse, a 1.8-liter straight-4 manages just 132 horsepower. With the 6-speed manual, it’s restricted to 27 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. Switching to a CVT in the Corolla Eco improves mileage to 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway while only moving horsepower to 140. Unlike the basic Corolla sedan, the Civic also provides an alternative 1.5-liter turbocharged straight-4 that can manufacture either 174 or 180 horsepower depending on enhancements. It also rations gas to 31 mpg city and 42 mpg highway* with the manual transmission but takes the top spot of 32 mpg city and 42 mpg highway* utilizing the CVT.

Safety

The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are also known for their safety features. The Civic comes standard with Honda Sensing, whereas the Corolla offers Toyota Safety Sense. Both safety features may seem similar, however, the Honda Civic offers more active and passive safety features than the Corolla.

Squeezing maximum mileage out of every drop of gas while not putting the squeeze on passengers is no easy task, but it’s what buyers expect of compact sedans. It’s obvious the Honda Civic has succeeded at this better than its main rival. To see what this success really feels like, try one out at our dealership today.
