The minivan remains the preferred choice for the family that desires comfort and roominess in a large vehicle. Not that SUVs don't shine in their own light, but the minivan provides a better combination of comfort, ease of loading and unloading, and ride quality. The Honda Odyssey was redesigned for 2017, and the new 2018 model receives even more tweaks and upgrades.

The 2018 Toyota Sienna has been refreshed as well. Most of the standard features, however, remain unchanged from last year. There's no interior design upgrade, and although it now features some of the driver awareness systems as standard equipment, there's a serious lack of some of the other fundamental systems. This model also can't compete with the Odyssey when it comes to overall ride quality and driver experience.

Comfortable Interior

One of the biggest selling points of the 2018 Honda Odyssey is the roomy, passenger-friendly cabin. The second-row outboard seats are big and cushy, and the soft padding extends to the nice armrests. The big sliding rear doors make for easy entry and exit, and they also make for easy loading and unloading of cargo. Speaking of cargo, there isn't a minivan on the market with more available storage. The seats slide easily to make room for big items like folding chairs, moving boxes, and camping equipment. The 2017 Toyota Sienna also boasts a roomy interior, but one of the major complaints made by owners is the difficulty in removing the second-row seats. If the eight-passenger version is chosen, the second-row bench seats decrease the amount of legroom for passengers, and the center section is the only part that slides.

Latest in High-Tech

Standard high-tech features on the base trim 2018 Honda Odyssey include a central display screen, Bluetooth, a USB charging port, and a nice seven-speaker audio system with USB interface. Moving up to the EX, one gets keyless ignition, an 8-inch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite radio. Unlike most competing models, the driver awareness systems including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision mitigation are standard on the mid-level trim. The EX-L has a rear entertainment system with a 10-inch overhead display, a Blu-ray player, and a cabin intercom system. Buyers can also enjoy the cabin monitoring camera system, where the driver can view the goings-on in the back even at night thanks to the infrared night-vision technology. The 2018 Toyota Sienna boasts several nice additions to the base trim features including most of the driver awareness systems, but buyers will have to pay top dollar for the navigation system and the birds-eye exterior camera.

Driver Experience

Handling of the 2018 Honda Odyssey is superb. The vehicle corners sharp turns with ease, and the V6 engine is strong for this class of minivan. Acceleration is better than average for a van, and the steering response is fantastic. The lower trims come with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the Touring and Elite versions come with 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Toyota Sienna also features very precise steering and acceptable acceleration, but the base trim comes with a somewhat underwhelming suspension system. Buyers will have to choose a higher trim in order to get the same handling quality as the base trim Odyssey.

Both of these vehicles deserve more than just a first look. When comparing them in terms of passenger comfort, desired high-tech features, and overall drivability, we think you'll agree with us that the Odyssey comes out a bit ahead of the Sienna.
