The 2018 Honda HR-V is a leader in its class. Its newest rival, the 2018 Toyota C-HR hopes to make inroads with the same shoppers. The C-HR was originally developed by Scion before Toyota discontinued the separate brand. In this review, we’ll look at how HR-Vs and C-HRs. Considering the HR-V’s size, fuel economy and dash technology, we think you’ll see there’s a clear winner in this race.
Fuel Economy and Performance
Choosing a smaller SUV should help you maximize your fuel economy. Both have 13.2-gallon tanks, but the HR-V’s cruising range is 403 miles vs. the C-HR’s range at 377 miles. If you check the fuel calculator on the website for the U.S. energy department, you’ll find the HR-V saves $1,250 in fuel costs over five years. The same calculator suggests you’ll save only $750 with the C-HR. The Toyota has three more horses under the hood than the Honda, but the HR-V weighs about 353 pounds less. That means the HR-V horsepower-to-weight ratio is the same or better than the C-HR.
Size and Utility
The HR-V has more room for you and more space for your gear. Chrome comparison data reveals that the HR-V passenger cabin has 101.1 cu.ft. of passenger space versus the Toyota’s 83.8 cu.ft. It’s easy to see which one will make you and your passengers more comfortable from the first moment of a short ride to the last moment of a long trip. Adding even more value, the HR-V hold measures a whopping 23.2 cu.ft. The C-HR hold measures 19 cu.ft. What more can you bring with four more cubes of space? Of course, the difference continues when the seats are folded down. Honda expands to 53 cubes while the Toyotas can claim only 36 cubes. Furthermore, the Magic Seat is exclusive to the HR-V. This offers four more ways to configure your cargo area. It makes it easier to gain vertical space for tall items.
Technology
The C-HR has a rearview camera, but the image shows up in the rearview mirror. This makes it harder to see than on a regular screen. In the HR-V, you will see the rearview camera image on the central touchscreen display. Honda’s basic system includes smartphone integration and Bluetooth streaming. It also lets you step up to another touchscreen with HD radio and a built-in Pandora app. Only the HR-V offers GPS navigation as well. Toyota does have a touchscreen on the C-HR, but this system doesn’t have smartphone integration capability.
