Sometimes it's difficult to understand why a particular SUV model is considered a compact rather than a mid-size. The Honda CR-V has more interior space, headroom and legroom, and cargo volume than just about any competitor in its segment. It also combines this with enough engine power to get the entire family and a load of belongings up to freeway speed with ease. Perhaps it's the excellent fuel economy or the visually deceptive smallness of the vehicle that places it in the compact category.

Another smaller-sized SUV with a good history of customer satisfaction is the Toyota RAV4. It's been around forever, and it's gone through as many design changes as the CR-V. However, most buyers who examine both vehicles closely are likely to discover some subtle differences between the two models, with the 2017 Honda CR-V coming out a bit ahead in the areas of powertrain choices, frame and body design, and modern high technology.

Engine and Powertrain

The only engine available on the 2017 Toyota RAV4 is a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine rated at 176 horsepower. That's more than many competing models in this vehicle class, but acceleration is noisy and a bit sluggish. Those familiar with the V6 option might be disappointed that it's no longer offered on the RAV4. The 2017 Honda CR-V can be purchased with a similar engine as the RAV4, but it puts out a total of 184 horsepower. The optional turbocharged 1.5L engine makes 190 horsepower and offers better acceleration than just about any other engine on any compact crossover on the market. The turbocharged engine is available on all but the base LX trim.

Exterior Design

The 2016 CR-V was a top selling model, so it came as a surprise that the folks at Honda would want to revamp and redesign the 2017 model. However, all of the changes are welcome. Most notable are the design changes to the exterior. The underpinnings have been completely reworked to decrease body roll. The front and rear tracks are a bit wider and the wheelbase is longer. The ground clearance has also been increased by a more than an inch-and-a-half, making for less stomach-scraping when the vehicle travels over rough dirt roads. The lengthening has slightly increased the cargo volume. Owners will now enjoy more than 78 cubic feet of storage space when the rear seats are folded flat. The 2017 Toyota RAV4 hasn't undergone any major exterior design changes since 2013, and some buyers may find its appearance a bit bland.

Instrumentation And High-Tech

Following the lead taken by the Civic in terms of a modernized dash and instrumentation panel, the 2017 CR-V offers a very refreshing upgrade to the front of the cabin. The digitally enhanced instrument cluster is easy to read and navigate, and the much-favored volume control knob, however retro, is a welcome change. Standard features on the base trim include a 5-inch LCD screen and Bluetooth, but the sweet spot is the EX and EX-L trims, both of which come with a beautifully designed 7-inch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and second-row USB charging ports. The 2017 Toyota RAV4 base trim doesn't come with the Entune system, and one has to purchase the very expensive Limited trim in order to get navigation and driver-seat memory functions.

Test drive the 2017 Honda CR-V today and see how it compares with the Toyota RAV4. You'll like every one of the upgrades, and you'll also appreciate the choice of two engines as well as the improvements to the high-tech features.
