What is Honda VTEC

 

Honda’s VTEC or Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control is the automaker's valve train system developed to help improve the volumetric efficiency of an internal combustion engine. Essentially, Honda VTEC technology is what allows slower cars to go a bit faster all while lowering fuel consumption.

 

How Does VTEC Work

 

Honda VTEC technology was the first of its kind to ever be developed. In a 4-stroke engine, VTEC allows for varied oil pressure to move between different cam profiles (usually two or three). VTEC engages different cam profiles to change the valve timing, duration, and lift.

At higher speeds, more oil enters the cylinder because the cam profile allows greater valve lift. In turn, the engine generates more horsepower.At lower speeds, the VTEC system will keep valves opened and closed in a manner that helps you improve fuel efficiency. When conditions change and you need more power such as going up a hill or going at higher rates of speed, a VTEC engine can give you a boost in performance by changing the valve timing yet again.

The power of a VTEC engine lies in its computerized system. This system detects when changes in power are required. The computer will send a signal to the camshaft alerting them to change their positions, either opening or closing at a specific degree.
